1.
Summer brought the plague, and the white and the blush flowers' petals fell in clumps to the earth. The rosy cheeks of the people grew pale, blistered and wept, tears trickling down. Now even the stars avert their eyes, and the clouds veil the face of the moon. Death spoke soft, whispered a warning, though precious few heard it carried on the wind, on the salty breeze blowing upriver from the sea; where sooty black rats came ashore under cover of darkness, in league with the night, and came tumbling and scrambling through the gutters of the town.

The Drowning 02:08
Maybe I should just let him go? Let him sink beneath the waves. Now I'm on the other side of the looking glass in this recrurring dream. A breaker broke and rocked the boat, and it capsized, and into the brine we fell, and in the icy waters of the firth, that stole your breath away, you sank like a stone. We rowed out on your wedding day, you were dressed in silk and woman's weeds. And you'd have lain there clad in silt and reeds, but for that like a mermaid you'd learned to breathe.

The Mermaid 03:08
"This morning one of our companie looking over boord saw a mermaid, and calling up some of the companie to see her, one more came up and by that time shee was come close to the ships side, looking earnestly on the men: a little after a sea came and overturned her: from the navill upward her backe and breasts were like a womans, as they say that saw her; her body as big as one of us; her skin very white, and long hair hanging downe behind of colour blacke: in her going downe they saw her tayle, which was like the tayle of a porposse and speckled like a macrell."

The Sea, she took away my eldest son left me to mourn my firstborn now the tide, the ebb and the flow makes a marionette of my boy in the deep in my dreams Now what has become of you? As the gloaming thins out and hastens away Rán won't you deliver them up onto the dawn, delay the day of their drowning? North wind you blew a storm full into her bow, and the waves took her down Tide you followed them out could you not see them in, home to their kin?

about

I started these recordings 4 years ago but didn't feel ready to release them into the wild. The unifying theme, if any, is the sea, even though (as Garnet Rogers once said of his brother Stan) I'd get seasick crossing a wet lawn.
